What Is The Life Expectancy Lung Cancer?

There is a great deal of research and clinical trials that are ongoing in an effort to improve the treatments available for lung cancer. There are several new chemotherapy drug that are now available that are treating lung cancer and improving quality of life. But what is the life expectancy lung cancer?

Early detection combined with aggressive treatment are both key to the life expectancy lung cancer offers. The average rate of survival is 49% for those that have their lung cancer detected early before it spreads from the lung. However, only 15% of all lung cancers are found at this stage.

There is some good news about life expectancy lung cancer. Every 30 years cure rates double for lung cancer. The one year survival rate has increased from just 34% in 1975 to 42%. The five year survival rate is only 15%.

Life expectancy lung cancer could see even bigger improvements in the future with some of the most promising research yet on the horizon. This includes specific oncogenes that have been found which researchers hope to use to develop new drugs; new tumor markers for screening; and drugs that are able to recognize only the cancerous lung cells, which have developed.

Currently the best way to increase life expectancy lung cancer is to simply not get it and the best weapon you have against that is to quit smoking and/or to avoid second hand smoke.
