Stage 3 Lung Cancer

Cancer is defined as the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. When these abnormal cells are growing in the lungs it means lung cancer is present. There are three stages to lung cancer. By the time stage 3 lung cancer is diagnosed the cancer is in the chest cavity, it may have spread from the lung area, and there is often fluid collection around the lungs.

Research shows that more than 85% of all lung cancer is related to smoking. If you quit smoking your risk of developing lung cancer are reduced. Lung cancer is defined by Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 lung cancer.

Stage 1 lung cancer is localized to an area of the lung. Stage 2 is defined by the spread of the cancer to the lymph nodes at the top of the lungs. Stage 3 lung cancer sees the cancer spread to the chest walls, then into other parts of the body, and there may be a collection of fluid.

At the early stages there are often few symptoms. As the disease progresses there may be a continuous cough, mucus with some blood, a hoarse voice, or difficulty swallowing. Symptoms do vary from person to person. If you are not diagnosed until stage 3 lung cancer surgery is usually recommended to remove the malignant tumor, and if that is not enough then removal of a lung may be the next alternative choice.

There are several ways that lung cancer is treated including chemotherapy or radiotherapy, which are used in the earlier stages. For the malignant tumors seen in stage 3 lung cancer surgery is generally recommended, followed by chemotherapy treatment.

Lung cancer is serious. In fact any type of lung infection needs to be addressed by a doctor. If you experience any of symptoms you should see your doctor. Ignoring symptoms will not make it go away and the sooner you get treatment the better your chances are. Walking with stage 3 lung cancer reduces a chance of a successful outcome.
